Summary Readers Response Draft #3

Ohnsman (2013) states Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, an advanced autopilot driver-assistance enhanced with automation for navigating roads and enabling driverless parking. They opt that autopilot has proven beneficial in aviation and should similarly be adopted in automobiles for improved safety and efficiency. Vehicle automation is evolving through six levels, aiming for full autonomy. Synopsys (n.d.) states the progression from Level 0, with no automation, to Level 5, where vehicles operate without human input. Key developments include adaptive cruise control at Level 1 and semi-automated driving at Level 2, leading up to complete autonomy at Level 5. The article also states that the gradual advancement signifies the automotive industry's effort to minimize human intervention, thereby enhancing safety and efficiency. Achieving Level 5 autonomy represents a major shift in transportation, aligned with technological innovation, showcasing the future of vehicular trave...

Tesla Automation - Summary Readers Response Draft #2

In the article, Ohnsman (2013)  states the introduction of Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system into vehicles, an advanced autopilot driver-assistance system enhanced with automation software to assist in road navigation and enable driverless parking. They opt that autopilot has proven beneficial in aviation and should similarly be adopted in automobiles for improved safety and efficiency. According to Synopsys (n.d.) , the spectrum of automation in vehicles is categorized into levels ranging from 0 to 5. Initially, vehicles at Level 0 lacked any form of driving automation. Progressing to Level 1, vehicles incorporated a single automated system, such as adaptive cruise control, to assist in steering or acceleration while maintaining a safe following distance. At Level 2, or semi-automated driving, the systems controlled both steering and acceleration/deceleration, with the stipulation that drivers must continuously monitor road conditions. The introduction of Level 3 automation b...

Tesla Automation - Summary Readers Response Draft #1

The autopilot system in vehicles benefits driver in the modern day according to  Ohnsman (2013)   "Autopilot systems in cars help enhance safety and convenience for driver" The “Full Self-Driving Capability” (FSD) is an advanced autopilot driver-assistance incorporated with partial vehicle automation software that helps with road navigation and driverless parking (Tesla, n.d.) . Scullion (2023) mentioned Tesla’s autopilot driving technology albeit FSD, driving requires attention and supervision as FSD features do not make the vehicle fully autonomous. Tesla integrates Level 0 to 5 driving automation. Synopsys (n.d.) elaborates that all level 0 vehicles are manually controlled with the driver navigating through the road. Systems such as emergency braking do not qualify as automation. Level 1 features one automated system, specifically adaptive cruise control which assists in steering or accelerating while monitoring the safety distance of the car ahead. Level 2 semi driving a...

Tesla Autopilot system - Full self-driving (FSD) Summary + Thesis statement

Autopilot systems in vehicles benefits driver in the modern day according to Ohnsman (2013) states that "Autopilot systems in cars help enhance safety and convenience for driver" Elon Musk,(2013) supported the concept of implementing autopilot systems in cars, similar to those in aircraft, quote "Autopilot is a good thing to have in planes, and we should have it in cars." Tesla's Autopilot, also referred to as Full Self-Driving (FSD), combines advanced hardware, sensors, and GPS for functionalities like autopilot, navigation, and self-parking. According to Blanco Sebastian (2014), noted that Tesla has been progressively improving and beta-testing these features, beginning with Auto Parking and Summon, enabling the car to autonomously park and approach its owner. Tesla's technology corresponds to various levels of driving automation, from Level 0 (no automation) to Level 5 (complete automation). Level 0 involves full driver control, Level 1 provides basic st...

Self Introductory Letter

Dear Professor Blackstone, I am Chang Hiu Chung, a first-year student in Mechanical Design and Manufacturing at SIT. I trust this letter succinctly outlines my academic journey thus far. My educational path began with a Medical Manufacturing Nitec, followed by a Precision Engineering Higher Nitec at ITE. Although initially interested in hairstyling, my natural inclination towards hands-on activities led me to engineering, sparked by my fascination with robotic toys. My goal is to become a program engineer. After my time at ITE, I pursued further education at Nanyang Polytechnic, where I was immersed in a comprehensive curriculum that covered CNC machining, milling, grinding, and the study of material properties. Throughout my years at the polytechnic, I acquired significant knowledge in machining processes. This expertise led me to undertake the task of designing a prototype for an EDM tool, initially intended to be crafted from scratch using metal. However, due to time constraints, I ...

The Importance of communication skills for engineers

“While all engineers should have good communication skills, global engineers face additional challenges, making effective communication an imperative.” -Debra Kraft, Careers Content Writer, Demand Media (2016)  This quote explains the versatility required of engineers—to embrace diverse methodologies and cultural variations across countries. As a global engineer, the lack of effective communication could become a liability to the team and the project. Not having the same  wavelength on languages   used ,  time zone differences , and  understanding of cultural diversities  could very well cause a grave misunderstanding or pushing of boundaries during a project with global engineers from different countries.  Language barriers, stemming from communication differences or varied terminologies, also present considerable challenges. Thus, it becomes crucial to maintain an open mindset and a positive learning attitude to continuously learn, adapt, and refine ...
