As a global engineer, the lack of effective communication could become a liability to the team and the project. Not having the same  wavelength on languages   used ,  time zone differences , and  understanding of cultural diversities  could very well cause a grave misunderstanding or pushing of boundaries during a project with global engineers from different countries.  Language barriers, stemming from communication differences or varied terminologies, also present considerable challenges.
